OC District President Marcia Willetts and Dean Mary Sprague recently returned from the California Federation of Women's Clubs' summer board meeting, and as Mary reports in the September issue of The Call, they came away with a list of the General Federation of Women's Clubs' "7 Grand Initiatives." Mary explains:
"Each has a 1,000 as a goal and they are:
That 1,000 clubs will do a service project on Martin Luther King Day, January 21, 2019.
That members will plant 1,000 trees on Arbor Day.
That members will donate 1,000 pairs of used shoes to Soles 4 Souls or Nike “reuse a shoe.”
That members donate 1,000 Dr. Seuss books by March of 2020.
That 1,000 members join the Legislative Action Center.
That members do 1,000 projects devoted to women in the military.
That 1,000 members donate $1,000 to the Capital Campaign.
"You will hear more about these initiatives as we proceed into this administration, but goals or initiatives are achievable if every club becomes involved," Mary says.
One of Marcia's top concerns for the district this year is fighting hunger, and that will be a focus of the district meeting planned for 9:45 a.m. Sept. 14 at the Phoenix Club. "Did you know that 1 out of 7 people in the world goes hungry and that 9 million people die of hunger every year because they can’t get enough to eat, according to writer and activist Tim Devaney?" Marcia writes in the September Call. "These statistics include citizens of the United States." A representative of Second Harvest Food Bank of Orange County will be the featured speaker at the meeting. Read more about it in The Call.
